It was a special night for Stan and Amy. They
were not able to
celebrate Stan's birthday until a week after it had passed. Sometimes
life got in the way of such matters. Stan phoned Amy from his cellular
as he got off the highway at Houston Street. He always called her to let
her know he would be in front of her place in a few minutes. Amy was
taking him out tonight for his birthday. He figured they would have
dinner together and enjoy each other's company. Perhaps she would have a
gift for him. Maybe a new hairbrush for his collection, he mused to
himself.
He pulled up in front of her house and waited
for her to come out.
After a few minutes, she was opening the car door and seating herself
beside him. “So, where are we going?” Stan asked. Amy pointed to her
left and said, “make a right at the light.” “A right?” Stan asked?
“Yeah, a right, I mean a left,” Amy laughed. Stan hadn't a clue
as to
where they were heading so he just drove and turned when Amy told him
to.
Finally they arrived at a parking lot and got
out of the car. A
surly looking parking lot attendant demanded to know, “What time you
will be back? I close at one.” Stan and Amy assured the gentleman that
they would be back before one. Stan smiled as the two of them walked
down the South Street Seaport. Even though Stan had lived in NY all his
life, he had only visited the seaport a few times. It was nice being
back there again. His surprise came when Amy informed him she had gotten
them tickets on the Circle Line to take a 1-hour cruise up the Hudson to
the Statue of Liberty. Stan was very happily surprised as they boarded
the boat.
The cruise was very enjoyable. Since they went
on the 7:30 cruise,
the hot temperatures had gone down just enough to make the ship
comfortable. The hour went by quickly and before Stan knew it, the ship
was back at the port. Stan asked Amy about dinner and she wanted to know
weather he wanted to eat in one of the places on the peer, or perhaps go
across the street to a place where it was a little quieter. Stan
informed Amy that a nice quiet place would be fine.
They walked across the street and found a
lovely restaurant called
The Yankee Clipper. Stan, being a Yankees fan just loved that name.
Actually, it was a very well known restaurant in New York and he was
anxious to try it out. They were seated at a table and ordered their
dinner. Not long after that, a child having dinner there with her
parents started screaming. The mother of the child kept telling the kid
to quiet down, but the child would not listen. Stan and Amy were trying
not to let it bother them, but had they wanted this type of atmosphere,
they would have ventured to the nearest McDonalds.
Stan said to Amy, “that lady is making as much
noise as the kid.”
Amy nodded her head and said, “if parents can't control their kids, they
shouldn't take them to a place like this.” Stan nodded his head in
agreement. The noise seemed to only get worse. Through their appetizers
of Manhattan claim chowder and shrimp cocktail, to their main course of
steamed lobster and lobster ravioli, it only got worse.
Finally, Stan was unable to take it anymore.
He got up and walked
over to the table with the offending noise makers. He looked down at the
table and saw the wife, with her husband and darling daughter.
Throughout dinner, the man had hardly made a sound. In fact, Stan didn't
even realize a man was at the table until he walked over there. The man
gave Stan an almost apologetic smile as Stan said, “Could you please
keep that child quiet. We are all paying a premium price to eat here and
the decor and atmosphere is one thing we are paying for.” Before the man
could say anything, the women said, “I keep telling Lisa to keep quiet,
but she won't. There is nothing I can do.”
Stan directed his next comment to the
gentleman. “Can't you take
matters into your own HANDS, sir?” Stan had accented the word hands, as
if hoping to make a point. The man started to talk but was cut off by
his wife. “Just what do you want me to do, she won't listen to me.” Stan
said, “well, a child who is taught at home that such behavior at the
dinner table is not acceptable would not behave that way when out to
eat. Apparently, that lesson has not been taught to her”. Once again,
the woman said, “I keep asking her not to behave like that, but she
won't listen. There is nothing I can do.” Finally Stan said, “Oh yes
there is. Don't you ever punish her? Perhaps that is what she needs.”
The woman looked up and said, “look, I can't control her now get
out of
here, ok? If you don't like the noise, next time bring earplugs with
you.”
Amy had been listening to the entire
conversation and flinched when
that last sentence escaped that ladies lips. She knew if she ever talked
to Stan in such a manner, she wouldn't be able to sit down for a week.
Stan's next question made Amy's heart skip a beat. It was directed at
the gentleman, who seemed too meek to do anything on his own. “May I
borrow your wife for just a few minutes. I'm not sure that she
understood what I meant by discipline. I’d like to show her myself.” The
man smiled a very wide grin and said, “Sure, be my guest.” Stan took the
woman by the hand and lifted her off her chair. He led her downstairs
toward the restroom. She shrieked at her husband, “Mark, what are is
happening here. Do something!” but Mark only sat there with a very
satisfied look on his face. It should be noted at this point that the
little girl at the table was too busy running back and forth throughout
the place to even notice what was going on.
Amy knew what Stan was going to do. It was
something that he
believed in and she kind of felt sorry for that lady, not! She was happy
that Stan was going to give her what she should have been giving her
daughter every time the little brat acted up. Mark got up from his table
and approached Amy. “Is that your husband?” he asked. “No, replied Amy.
We are very close, but not married.” “Does he spank you too?” Mark
asked. Amy blushed a little bit and laughed as she said, “Well, do you
see me making noise at this table?” Mark chuckled and went back to his
table.
About 10 minutes passed when Stan arrived at
the top of the stairs.
Following closely behind was Mark's wife. Her face was red and it was
obvious she had been crying. Her right hand was rubbing her backside.
She went back to her table and gingerly sat down next to her husband.
Stan went back to his seat. It was at that moment that two waiters came
over with a hunk of cheesecake with a candle on it. They started singing
happy birthday. Stan smiled at Amy. As Stan placed the first morsel of
cake into his mouth he heard the little girl scream out again. He rolled
his eyes at Amy, but before he could say a word, he heard Cathy say to
her daughter, “Lisa, come here this instant. I am sick and tired of
talking to you. The time for talk has ended.” With that, he watched as
Cathy took Lisa by the hand and led her down the steps to the restroom.
As they disappeared out of sight, Stan heard Cathy say, “its time you
finally got a spanking.” Stan ate another piece of his cheesecake. He
smiled at Amy. Yes, it had been quite a birthday.
